Two undated holograph memoirs accompanied by a brief 1928 letter from Berry to Clifton B. Worthrn which asks Worthrn to either edit or dispose of the enclosed papers. The first narrative describes Berry's uniform and equipment as a soldier in Montana during the early 1870s, settlers passing through the Judith Basin area, disappointed gold prospectors leaving Yogo City, and the route Berry used to freight furs to market at Fort Benton. Berry also details the success of a fur trader named Frank Gaugler who traded skins with Salish Indians near the fork of the Musselshell River and for whom Berry worked. The second narrative describes the escort, by Berry's company in the 7th U. S. Infantry and two other companies stationed in Montana, of an 1874 expedition that established the town of Carroll as a new steamboat landing on the Missouri and opened up the Carroll Trail for traffic. Berry also mentions a buffalo hunt during the journey, describes Carroll's first settlers, and comments on attacks in the area by Lakota the following year.
